Hunter Hess Addresses Controversy About His Olympic Representation

Hunter Hess, a freestyle skier representing the U.S. at the Olympics, is facing criticism, including remarks from former President Trump, following his comments about having “mixed emotions” during the competitions in Milan.

After stating he was “not the biggest fan of everything” happening in the country and that he competes for “my family and the people who supported me getting here,” Trump responded on Truth Social, labeling the 27-year-old skier a “real loser.”

On Monday, Hess took to social media to clarify his feelings. “I love my country,” he expressed. “There are many great things about America, but there’s always something better. One of the many strengths of this country is our freedom to point out issues.” He emphasized the unifying aspect of the Olympics, stating, “At a time when we’re divided, we need this now more than ever. I’m eager to represent Team USA next week and appreciate your support.”

Hess’s original comments came after the opening ceremony, where he remarked, “I think representing the United States right now brings up mixed emotions. It’s a little difficult. Obviously, there are people I’m not a fan of, and I believe many share that sentiment.” He pointed out that just because he wears the American flag, it doesn’t mean he endorses everything happening in the U.S.

Another athlete, Chris Lillis, shared his thoughts, mentioning the importance of respecting everyone’s rights. “I hope people look at the athletes competing in the Olympics and see the America we strive to represent,” he said.

Snowboarder Maddie Maestro, the women’s halfpipe champion, also expressed her pride in representing the U.S., but added that she feels “saddened by what’s happening” in the country. “It’s really tough,” she noted. “We cannot ignore this situation. But I also represent a country founded on kindness and compassion, and we stand united in the face of injustice.”
