Eric Swalwell Promotes Controversial Story About 5-Year-Old to Pressure ICE Director to Step Down

Controversial Hearing on ICE Detention of Child

During a hearing on Tuesday, Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell from California raised the contentious issue of a 5-year-old boy detained by federal agents, aiming to pressure Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to resign.

Liam Conejo Ramos, an Ecuadorian child, became emblematic of leftist criticism of ICE after he was detained in Minnesota in January, linked to an incident involving his father. Swalwell displayed a photo of the boy during a homeland security hearing and confronted Lyons, stating he needed to choose between protecting children and supporting those who perpetrate violence.

“The decision to remain in your position is yours to make. Considering your service and the shameful actions of your subordinates, you now face a choice: Do you stand with the children mandated to be protected or with the individual causing fear in our communities?” Swalwell questioned. He then asked, “Mr. Lyons, are you considering resigning from ICE?”

Lyons responded that he had no plans to resign when pressed by Swalwell.

“Well, you see, this child you’re showing me, the ICE agents looked after him when his father deserted him and he fled from law enforcement,” Lyons replied.

Swalwell countered, insisting that the child should never have been in custody in the first place.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) indicated that the child’s father, Adrian Conejo Arias, was the target of an operation to arrest illegal immigrants. They asserted that the boy became involved in the father’s arrest because the father requested that authorities take him into custody after the boy’s mother declined to bring him along.

Both Democratic politicians and various media outlets have often cited Ramos’ case to express their opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
