Iranian official travels to Oman soon after indirect nuclear discussions with the US

Iranian Security Official Visits Oman Following Nuclear Talks

Just a few days after indirect nuclear discussions between Iran and the United States took place in Oman, a senior Iranian security figure was seen visiting the country.

Ali Larijani, who is a former parliament speaker and currently serves as the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, appears to be in Oman to discuss developments stemming from the recent meeting. As reported by the Associated Press, Larijani’s team shared a photo of him together with Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who plays a central role in mediating the US-Iran negotiations.

While Iranian media suggested that Larijani would deliver a significant message, state television later indicated that al-Busaidi simply “handed a letter” to Iranian officials, though details about the letter’s contents were not provided.

Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts

According to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, Larijani met with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq for nearly three hours during his visit. The report also mentioned that he plans to head to Qatar in 2025, where the US military operates from a facility that has reportedly targeted Iran’s nuclear sites.

Just prior to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned trip to the United States, Larijani accused Israel of disrupting the talks, emphasizing that the Americans should be cautious about Israel’s influence. He expressed concerns that Netanyahu might try to dictate the framework for nuclear negotiations.

Israel and Iran had a brief conflict in the summer of 2025 that included US bombings of Tehran’s nuclear facility. Amid ongoing anti-government protests within Iran, the country has directed its grievances at both Israel and the United States.

Next Steps in Negotiations

Officials from both nations stated that the initial round of discussions was productive and indicated intentions to continue. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei shared that the Muscat meeting, though short, served as an opportunity to gauge each side’s seriousness and to explore future steps.

Baghaei underscored Iran’s commitment to securing its interests in alignment with international standards and the peaceful use of nuclear energy, while stressing that forthcoming discussions would clarify the next phases of the diplomatic effort.

Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, termed the indirect negotiations as a “good start,” noting there was mutual acknowledgment of concerns and interests during the talks. He said the future will hinge on discussions within each capital.

President Donald Trump also commented positively on the indirect talks, suggesting that Iran is eager for a deal and acknowledging the potential consequences if no agreement is reached.

Tensions remain high as representatives from both nations met separately with Omani officials, with discussions centered around creating the right environment for resuming diplomatic negotiations.
