The daughter of Republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson in Minnesota was reportedly strangled by her husband several months before he was taken into custody on charges of attempted murder-suicide, according to court documents.
Harry Marie Tobler, aged 22, was discovered in her St. Cloud apartment last weekend, having sustained multiple stab wounds. She had previously informed the police about an incident involving her husband, Dylan Michael Tobler, 23, during a disturbance on June 19, 2025.
In a complaint filed in the 7th Judicial District of Minnesota, Tobler claimed that her husband strangled her while she was experiencing delusions and mentioned that Dylan had a “history of aggressive behavior.”
Tobler suggested that Dylan battled with mental illness, indicating that psychosis can make it hard for individuals to differentiate between reality and fantasy.
The records further revealed that during this distressing incident, Dylan was making vague suicide threats, expressing he didn’t feel like he needed to be alive any longer.
Officers reported that Dylan was shouting and communicating with Harry in a way that was difficult to understand, while also damaging a picture frame and tearing the photo inside.
After pleading guilty, Dylan faced misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges, receiving a $150 fine on January 28, 2026.
Now in stable condition while in police custody, he is anticipated to face murder charges concerning Tobler’s death once he is released from the hospital, according to police reports.
This tragic event led Jeff Johnson to suspend his campaign for the upcoming 2026 gubernatorial race in Minnesota, as communicated by the Minnesota Republican Party in a statement on Monday.
“There are no words to fully convey the sorrow felt for Jeff and his family. Losing a child is beyond comprehension, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this heartbreaking time,” the statement expressed.
Due to the significant loss, the Johnsons have paused their campaign efforts, with a plea for Minnesotans to support the family during this overwhelmingly difficult period.
The Johnson family could not be reached for further comments.
