DHS reports that an ICE detainee injured his head during an escape and refutes allegations of being beaten.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently revealed an incident involving an undocumented immigrant who alleged that his daughter was beaten by immigration agents so severely that she couldn’t remember hitting her head against a concrete surface while trying to escape.

Alberto Castaneda Mondragon, a 31-year-old from Mexico, was apprehended by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota during an operation on January 8. According to DHS, Castaneda attempted to flee and, while running away, fell and hit his head.

After being apprehended, Castaneda was checked out by an ambulance, but he declined medical care, insisting that he was fine. However, jail medical personnel later examined him and he was then transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for head injuries.

In an interview with a news agency, Castaneda shared a different perspective on what happened. He claimed that as soon as he was arrested, he was subjected to violence. He mentioned being stopped outside a shopping center in St. Paul while in a car with a friend, where he said officers threw him to the ground, handcuffed him, and struck him multiple times.

Castaneda described being taken to a detention center where the beating continued. He recounted a painful experience involving severe injuries, including several skull fractures and brain bleeds, which he stated were not caused by a fall. He emphasized that no wall was involved in his injuries and expressed feeling victimized by what he perceived as racist behavior from law enforcement during the incident.

DHS, on the other hand, regarded the actions of Castaneda and others during the incident as resistance to arrest, which they argue poses dangers not only to law enforcement but also to the community at large. They cautioned that such actions are criminal and encouraged politicians to avoid fostering this kind of behavior that endangers public safety.
