Jose Alvarado describes his first game at Madison Square Garden as unforgettable.

Jose Alvarado’s Thrilling Home Debut with the Knicks

Jose Alvarado, who grew up gaming in Brooklyn and made a name for himself at Christ the King High School in Queens, experienced quite a moment during his home debut as a Knick. When he stepped onto the court late in the first quarter, he was met with applause from the Madison Square Garden crowd; it caught him off guard.

“I mean, it’s surprising. It’s tough to play for the Knicks, but I’m just a kid from the city. It’s truly a blessing to be here,” Alvarado expressed. He admitted that he needed some time to adjust and just let things happen.

He mentioned the crowd’s reaction, saying, “It was amazing. Being a city kid, it felt incredible to get that love back. I can’t even put it into words.” However, the game didn’t end as he had hoped. The Knicks faced a disappointing 137-134 overtime loss to the struggling Pacers. Alvarado contributed five assists but only managed to score four points during his 18 minutes and 13 seconds on the floor.

“Not the outcome we wanted, but honestly, we were fortunate to be able to play, and I’m eager to keep growing and improving,” he said.

It was clear he had a lot of support, though when asked about how many folks were there for him, he humorously replied, “A lot.”

Admitting his nerves, Alvarado shared, “I was definitely on edge today. A lot went down. I’m just thankful it all worked out okay. I can’t wait to get back out there and learn more, and of course, win some games.” While he had his moments, he also faced some struggles, with the team unable to pull away effectively.

Alvarado debuted after leading the Knicks to a win over Boston just days earlier. He didn’t check in until only 2:05 remained in the first quarter, but when he did, the cheers were loud as his team was ahead by just one point.

He quickly made an impression, first preventing a turnover and then assisting on a 3-pointer from Jalen Brunson. Alvarado even dove into the stands to save another ball. But ultimately, both he and his teammates made mistakes that proved costly.

Looking forward, Alvarado’s coach from high school, Joe Arbitello, expressed confidence, stating, “It’s always great when he comes back home. He took it to another level, and other players can feel that.” He was in the crowd supporting Alvarado, believing that, despite the rough game, he’ll thrive in that electric atmosphere.

“He’ll play great here, just as he always does,” Arbitello noted.

Interestingly, unlike many players who ramp up their intensity at home, Arbitello feels Alvarado will keep his consistent approach. “He’s always going to be the same player. Tough, determined, that’s just who he is,” he remarked.

So, will the Garden’s spotlight really affect him? “It doesn’t matter where he plays. Whether it’s the Garden or a local rec game, he’ll give it his all,” Arbitello added.

Many share the belief that Alvarado will stand out as a Knick and earn the crowd’s affection. “If he delivers like he has in New Orleans and elsewhere, he will absolutely become a fan favorite here,” said Arbitello. “We’ve been waiting for this moment, and when it happens, it’s going to be incredible.”
