New Jersey Photographer Finds Freedom on a Cruise Ship

A photographer from New Jersey made a big life change by selling her cherished home to work on a luxury cruise ship, partly due to facing significant debt.

Sue Barr, now in her 60s, bid farewell to her life in New Jersey and took to the seas as a talented photographer, capturing moments of joy among her passengers.

“The ocean gave value to everything,” Barr reflects in a book she wrote. “A sunset over unobstructed open water can change the entire mood. Every time we arrive at a new port, the world opens up again.”

After raising her son on her own, Barr felt the need for change once he graduated and moved to Florida. “My home no longer supported my future,” she explained. It had transformed from a cozy sanctuary into a heavy burden with increasing debt.

“I built a home to raise confident, independent kids, but holding on to it was preventing me from moving on to the next chapter, a chapter filled with creative potential that debt was blocking,” she continued.

Financial struggles kept her from exploring the world. “I was so deeply in debt that all I wanted was to travel, but I couldn’t find a way out,” she said, noting an incessant feeling of playing whack-a-mole with her finances.

Selling her house, however, became a turning point. It alleviated her financial burdens and even allowed her to get necessary dental work in Brazil. “The weight I had been carrying began to lift. Brazil helped me regain my confidence, reminding me that reinvention is always possible,” she remarked.

During her travels in South America, Barr rediscovered her passion for photography. When a friend got a job on a cruise ship, she decided to look for a position at sea.

Eventually, she secured an offer from a cruise line and completed the required medical and functional testing for her age. She found herself excitedly stationed on deck 15, a significant improvement over a former windowless cabin.

“Climbing endless stairs every day was tiring, and dealing with old equipment often made my days feel long. But the experience on deck made it all worthwhile,” she said.

In just six months, Barr’s role took her to three different continents, reigniting her spirit as she smiled without hesitation. Each new port brought fresh opportunities for exploration, allowing her creativity to flourish.

“For the first time in ages, I felt my creative spirit solidifying. By letting go, I could absorb so much more,” she wrote.

An injury sidelined her for a few months, which gave her time to return to New Jersey to look for a new home. She eventually found an affordable apartment with an ocean view in Asbury Park.

“It felt like the universe was finally giving me a chance to pursue hope and creativity,” she reflected.

“I released everything that held me back. What I gained was freedom—the freedom to create, to travel, and to smile at last, with my camera as my ticket to the front.”
