Season 3 Highlights from contraction
Today marks a big day. It’s the birthday of Brian and Charlie, as well as Jimmy’s special occasion as a father.
The guest star lineup for Season 3 of contraction is impressive, running for three weeks in a row. The premiere featured Michael J. Fox as Jerry, a Parkinson’s patient who forms a bond with Paul, played by Harrison Ford. The second episode introduced new characters like Maya, a patient of Gabby’s, and Sean’s ex, Marisol. And in Episode 3, aptly titled “D-Day,” we finally meet Jimmy’s father, Randy, portrayed by Jeff Daniels.
When we first see Randy, he’s having dinner with Jimmy, Alice, and Summer. Alice mentions she hasn’t seen her grandpa lately, and Jimmy reveals that Randy’s visit was a surprise. I mean, if I had known, I might have offered him something better than Summer’s Black Cherry White Claw! It turns out Randy was nearby for a car show, but Jimmy wasn’t exactly thrilled about it. Randy also had some interesting remarks about his vintage Bronco and playfully referred to Jimmy as “Jimbo,” even if Jimmy didn’t like it. And, in a somewhat awkward manner, he shared that he “always had a hard time asking girls out.”
Throughout their dinner, Randy’s demeanor shifts as he processes some deep emotions. While Jimmy shows his softer side, Randy maintains a tougher exterior, showcasing the complexities in their father-son dynamics. At one point, Alice tries to ask Randy about attending her graduation but is interrupted by Jimmy, who takes her into the kitchen instead.
“You know I love it when you give me a hard time, right?” Jimmy tells Randy. “Well, sort of. I hate it, but there’s something nice about being included. With you guys, it’s different. It feels a bit more complicated for me.”
Alice gets the hint and refrains from inviting her grandfather to the graduation. Later, while hiking with Paul and Gabby, Jimmy shares that Randy doesn’t even remember his birthday, hinting at deeper unresolved issues in their relationship. He’s worried about getting hurt again.
Despite the tension, it’s clear that Jeff Daniels brings a special charm to the role. He’s done a ton of work—nearly 100 credits, from films to acclaimed series like newsroom. His chemistry with the cast, especially in scenes with Summer, is noteworthy. Lukita Maxwell, who plays a granddaughter, has praised her on-screen grandfather’s presence during filming.
“He’s just great. A really cool guy on set. He’d walk around with his guitar, do little things that lighten the mood, and then we’d dive into our takes,” Maxwell commented.
Reflecting on Daniels’ career, Maxwell mentioned, “He’s an iconic figure. The first film I saw him in was Because of Winn-Dixie. He was one of the first actors I recognized as an actor.”
While I won’t give away too much, it’s reassuring to know we haven’t seen the last of Daniels in Season 3 of contraction. Maxwell expressed her excitement about seeing his interactions with Jason Segel.
A new episode of Season 3 of contraction airs Wednesday on Apple TV.
