OpenAI dismisses executive for suspected sexual discrimination after her criticism of ChatGPT erotic content proposal, according to report.

OpenAI has terminated a female executive due to claims of sexual discrimination against a male colleague after she expressed disapproval of the company’s intention to implement an “adult mode” for ChatGPT, which would facilitate sexual conversations.

Ryan Beiermeister, the vice president of product policy at OpenAI, has firmly rejected the allegations of gender discrimination. “Any claim that I discriminated against anyone is completely false,” she stated in an interview.

Beiermeister, who joined OpenAI in June 2024 after previous roles at Palantir and Meta, was recognized for her significant contributions to the company. OpenAI mentioned that her departure was not related to any concerns she raised during her tenure.

In her role, Beiermeister led the team responsible for formulating usage policies for OpenAI’s products and played a key part in establishing enforcement mechanisms for those rules.

In discussions with colleagues before her dismissal, she voiced her opposition to the “Adult Mode,” citing worries about its potential harmful impacts. She also expressed concerns regarding OpenAI’s measures to prevent child exploitation content and the safeguarding of teens from accessing inappropriate material.

She had taken a leave of absence prior to her return just last month, but was informed of her termination in early January, according to sources familiar with the situation. Specific details concerning the discrimination accusations remain unclear.

While at OpenAI, Beiermeister initiated a mentorship program aimed at supporting women within the organization. Her firing occurred just ahead of OpenAI’s planned rollout of “Adult Mode,” designed to permit age-verified users to partake in adult discussions, including sexual topics.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, indicated plans to broaden the scope of acceptable content on ChatGPT as the company tightens age restrictions. He stated in October that the company would implement more comprehensive age restrictions and allow certified adult erotica as part of their approach to treat adult users appropriately.

Beiermeister was among several OpenAI staff who raised concerns regarding the implementation of “Adult Mode.” A former employee, Steven Adler, who previously led product safety at the company, warned against trusting OpenAI with adult content without demonstrating that it adequately addresses serious mental health risks.

Adler highlighted an alarming “crisis” surrounding erotic role-play content found in past analyses, emphasizing substantial emotional attachments that users may develop towards chatbots. He criticized OpenAI for moving too hastily due to competitive pressures and called for the company to ensure effective safeguards when broadening adult content offerings.
