Rep. Bennie Thompson Presents AI-Generated Image of Alex Pretti Shooting to House Floor

AI Image Misuse At House Hearing

During a House Homeland Security Committee meeting on Tuesday, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi) presented a controversial AI-generated image that inaccurately portrayed the shooting death of Alex Preti. Notably, the image depicted a federal officer missing their head.

“A CBP officer shot and killed Alex Preti in broad daylight as he lay face down on a Minneapolis sidewalk,” Thompson stated, referencing the misleading image while criticizing the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security.

Interestingly, Thompson accused Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem of “gassing the public” and fabricating a “clearly false story” about Preti, using the altered photos displayed behind him.

One might think that, as the ranking member of the committee, Thompson would learn from recent events—Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) also faced backlash last month for showing the same fabricated AI image during a Senate speech.

Social media users reacted strongly to Durbin’s remarks, highlighting the absurdity of displaying an AI-generated photo that showed a federal employee without a head. Many comments criticized him for presenting such a misleading image.

“It’s hard to believe, but it’s real,” Eric Teetzel, CEO of the Center for Renewing America, commented about Durbin’s use of a fake AI image. Other users called for accountability, suggesting the senator should face censure for his actions.

Durbin’s post even contained a community note clarifying that the image shown was digitally altered from the original capture related to the Preti case, highlighting its glaring inaccuracies.

While Thompson accurately pointed out that Preti was shot by a CBP officer, he too failed to show the real photograph of the incident while making his argument against the Trump administration.

Like Durbin, Thompson faced criticism from users online who pointed out the similarities between his remarks and those made by the senator.

One user remarked, “Benny Thompson is pushing fake AI nonsense on the House Homeland Security Committee.” Others echoed this sentiment, suggesting that Democrats were deliberately showcasing these misleading images to vilify federal law enforcement.

This situation raised questions about the integrity of the images being used in official settings, leading some users to express disbelief and frustration over the use of AI-generated graphics in such serious contexts.
