Columbus Man Faces Federal Charges in Teen’s Death

A 39-year-old man from Columbus is facing federal charges related to the sexual exploitation of a minor. This development follows his earlier arrest concerning the mysterious disappearance and death of 17-year-old Haley Buzbee, whose remains were discovered in the Wayne National Forest.

Tyler Thomas was initially detained in January, and authorities say he and Buzbee met while playing video games online.

A federal complaint alleges that Thomas traveled from Columbus to Indiana overnight on January 5-6 to meet Buzbee. His intention allegedly was to bring her back to Ohio for illicit sexual activities, specifically for producing child pornography.

If found guilty on these charges, he could face up to 30 years in prison for each count. Jason Cromartie, an FBI Special Agent in Charge, expressed frustration that they couldn’t return Haley to her family, yet affirmed their commitment to pursuing justice in this case.

Further investigations revealed that a forensic analysis of Thomas’ cell phone uncovered deleted conversations with Buzbee. This included Snapchat messages and explicit images of her at his residence and at an Airbnb in Logan, Ohio.

Additionally, the examination found materials related to child sexual abuse involving another girl, estimated to be between 7 to 10 years old, along with inappropriate messages exchanged with a teenage boy via Discord.

Thomas made his first appearance in federal court on Tuesday, with the details of the case sealed. Local charges against him are likely to be dropped as this federal case unfolds.

Haley Buzbee is remembered as a vibrant individual who had a passion for music and loved spending time with her family. Her father shared that any changes stemming from this tragedy will reflect the love she brought into the world.

She is survived by her father, Bo Buzbee; her stepmother, Ronya Buzbee; her sister, Sabriya Buzbee; her mother, Lindsey Simmons; her brother, Elijah Ratcliffe; and other family members.
