Canadian School Shooting: Suspect Identified
In a recent report, Reuters referred to the suspect in a Canadian school shooting that resulted in nine deaths as a female. Ahead of the arrest, police described the individual in an alert as “a woman in a dress with brown hair.” This suspect has been identified as Jesse Van Rootseller, a transgender person.
As of Wednesday afternoon, headlines announced the suspect as an 18-year-old woman with mental health challenges. One journalist pointed out that while the shooter was identified as Jesse Strang, a biological male who identified as transgender, many outlets consistently described him as a “woman.” There’s a sentiment emerging that facts should indeed take precedence over ideology in such discussions.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police shared that the individual committed suicide post-massacre and had identified as female for several years despite being born male. Deputy Chief Dwayne Macdonald mentioned that the police had visited the suspect’s family home multiple times due to mental health concerns.
It’s reported that the suspect first harmed his mother, aged 39, and his 11-year-old stepbrother. In addition, over 25 individuals sustained injuries during the attack, according to CBC News.
Nina Krieger, the British Columbia Minister of Public Safety, referred to the incident as “one of the worst mass shootings in our state and nation’s history.”
Social media linked to Van Rootseller suggests a trajectory of radicalization tied to issues of identity and biological confusion. Interestingly, other outlets like the Washington Post and NBC News have similarly used feminine pronouns for Robin Westman, another biological male who committed a tragic shooting at a Catholic school in Minnesota, killing two children and injuring several others.
Reuters has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this coverage. I think it raises quite a few questions about how these situations are portrayed in the media.
