Zohran Mamdani criticized for using unclear budget calculations to justify tax increases

Mayor’s Budget Mysteries Raise Eyebrows

It’s hard to ignore the strange timing of Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s latest budget revelations.

Just days after painting a dire picture of a $12 billion budget shortfall, he shared that the gap has somehow shrunk to $7 billion. This shift has left some city insiders scratching their heads, questioning the calculations that seem to back the Democratic Socialists’ calls for tax hikes.

During his testimony before the New York State Assembly, Mamdani admitted that the initial, grim scenario had improved significantly in just two weeks. “Our situation has evolved not just because of rising economic forecasts and Wall Street bonuses, but also due to proactive savings and utilizing reserves,” he asserted after over five hours of testimony.

Yet, many are still puzzled. Budget Director Sherif Soliman disclosed that revenue projections had been underestimated by $2.4 billion, effectively suggesting this year’s financial situation is much more manageable than initially thought. Surprisingly, forecasts for next year now predict an increase of $4.8 billion in revenue compared to prior estimates.

City officials, including Governor Kathy Hochul, were already aware that revenue would rise significantly this month, contradicting the previous warnings about the budget gap. Despite the shift, Mamdani continues advocating for a 2% income tax hike for those earning $1 million or more, which fuels frustration among some officials.

“It’s almost unbelievable that they tried to retract the narrative so quickly. I doubt anyone will actually buy this miraculous recovery,” a frustrated insider commented. “It just doesn’t add up.”

Another individual acknowledged the reality of the budget gap but emphasized, “The math just doesn’t add up.” They noted that, while the city might face true financial challenges, it feels like old tactics are being reused by a new administration.

The confusion continues. Although the predicted tax increases accounted for a hefty $7.2 billion, only $3 billion has been earmarked to actually cover the deficit. Mamdani mentioned that his administration plans to tap into reserves and temporary savings, leaving $4.2 billion of expected new revenue untracked until next February.

“How can new taxes even be justified under these circumstances? Unless we’re planning to allocate funds to more questionable projects,” one observer remarked.

Former Mayor Eric Adams has joined the chorus of critics, pointing out the odd timing of Mamdani’s newfound budget relief. “Just four weeks later, he ‘miraculously’ finds $5 billion,” Adams stated on social media. “Let’s wait another month—maybe the rest will show up then.”

Questions remain unanswered as City Hall officials opted not to clarify the budget’s calculations. Andrew Lane, head of the Citizens Budget Committee, has stated that New Yorkers will need to hold tight for another week for more clarity. “We really need solid numbers on Tuesday,” he asserted.
