Sen. Tim Sheehy’s Take on Job Growth

Senator Tim Sheehy, a Republican from Montana, shared his thoughts on the latest jobs report during a policy event hosted by Breitbart News. He stated that the figures suggest “American companies are investing in American jobs in America.”

In a discussion with Matthew Boyle, the Washington Bureau Chief at Breitbart, Sheehy emphasized the importance of understanding what these job numbers really indicate.

According to John Carney, Breitbart News’ economics editor, the U.S. economy created 130,000 jobs in January, significantly exceeding expectations. Initially, economists had forecasted an addition of 55,000 jobs; however, predictions varied widely with some experts suggesting anywhere from zero to 130,000 jobs. The unemployment rate was projected to remain steady at 4.4%. This report was delayed a few days due to the partial government shutdown.

The entirety of the job growth stemmed from the private sector, which saw an increase of 172,000 jobs, while federal government positions decreased by 34,000, and state and local jobs dropped by 8,000. In January, construction saw an uptick of 33,000 jobs, whereas manufacturing added 5,000 jobs. Specifically, durable goods manufacturing contributed 9,000 jobs, contrasting with a loss of 4,000 jobs in nondurable goods manufacturing. Additionally, private sector services grew by 136,000 jobs, mainly in health and social services. Professional and business services added 34,000 jobs, while retail contributed a modest 1,200 jobs.

“It’s a victory. It’s vindication,” Sheehy remarked, acknowledging that the Working Families Tax Relief Act, passed the previous year, mitigated what could have been the largest tax increase in history.

He also commended President Trump, noting, “We have a great Cabinet in place.” Despite criticism from Democrats, who label cabinet members as “unqualified” and “unfit for office,” Sheehy defended them as “aggressive revisionists” who comprehend the mission they have been assigned.

Reflecting on the past year’s changes in American jobs, Sheehy stressed the significance of understanding the implications of these statistics. He noted that they illustrate how American companies are increasingly focusing their investments on jobs within the country. He acknowledged a shift towards a private sector-driven economy, albeit with some decline in public sector employment.
