Insights into the Turbulent Relationship of King Charles and Princess Diana
The saga between King Charles and Princess Diana has always been complex, and Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, played a significant role in managing the fallout. In his new book, “The Royal Insider”, Burrell reflects on what he witnessed during their tumultuous time together.
At 67, Burrell recalls being a close confidant of Diana amid escalating tensions with Charles. In fact, a spokesperson from Buckingham Palace, when approached for a comment on the book, stated, “We do not comment on such books.”
Burrell claims that the disputes weren’t just occasional; they often raged behind palace doors. He narrated an incident where he found Charles, embarrassed, covered in salad dressing after an argument. “The dinner table was overturned, there was broken china everywhere,” he recalled. He added, “Diana had run upstairs crying,” which underscored the emotional turmoil present in their relationship.
However, he emphasized that Charles never physically harmed Diana; he noted her emotional suffering as a significant consequence of their unravelling marriage. Burrell observed that arguments would become chaotic, often resulting in broken dishes and shouting matches. “Charles was not the sort to reconcile readily,” he remarked, reflecting on the frustration he saw in both parties.
Burrell pointed out that despite his attempts early on to make the marriage work, the significant age difference and unfitting lifestyles often left them miles apart. Diana, feeling out of place in the royal fishbowl, sought understanding but realized she had no real power in the relationship, where Charles remained tethered to his long-time love, Camilla Parker Bowles.
Interestingly, Burrell noted how both Diana and the Queen provided support during tumultuous times, underscoring that while there was hope for the marriage, it ultimately failed to materialize. As tensions heightened, Diana famously asserted in a 1995 BBC interview that her marriage felt overcrowded, hinting at the presence of Camilla in their lives.
Eventually, by 1996, their divorce was finalized. Only a year later, in a tragic incident in Paris, Diana lost her life. While Charles and Camilla tied the knot in 2005, it’s clear that the legacy of Diana still looms large. Burrell pointed out that public sentiment around Charles has changed since he became king; some appreciation is likely due to his late mother’s influence, but for many, the memory of Diana remains unforgettable.
