Katie Holmes expressed her heartfelt tribute on Wednesday to her late co-star from Dawson’s Creek, James Van Der Beek.
“I wrote some words with a heavy heart,” the 47-year-old actress mentioned in an Instagram post. “There’s a lot for me to process,” she added, sharing her thoughts with fans.
Holmes, who portrayed Joey Potter on the series from 1998 to 2003, reflected, “I’m so grateful to have shared a part of James’ journey. He is deeply loved.”
In her note, she emphasized the sacredness of their shared experiences, saying, “It’s special to create space for imagination, to breathe the same air in a realm of belief, and to trust in the safety of each other’s minds.” She recalled memories, laughter, and heartfelt conversations sparked by songs from James Taylor during their adventures.
The actress concluded her message by extending her love to James’ wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six children, describing their family life as a “hero’s journey.”
Holmes went on to commend James for his compassion, courage, and appreciation for life, noting how these qualities shaped his legacy. She admitted that the loss is heavy, yet she feels grateful for what he left behind.
In her closing remarks, she reassured Kimberly and their children—Olivia, Joshua, Annabelle, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah—that she would always be there for them with love and support.
James married Kimberly in August 2010, later moving their family from Los Angeles to Texas. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancer in August 2023 and publicly shared his health struggles the following November.
Kimberly posted on Instagram about James’ passing, describing his final moments as filled with courage and grace. Following this, friends of James launched a GoFundMe campaign to support his family, which has raised over $1 million so far. Personal moments shared by friends, including Stacey Keibler, have also surfaced, capturing James’ final days at Spicewood Ranch.
