Senator John Cornyn presents the 'Defeat Sharia Law Act'

Texas Senator Proposes Legislation Against Sharia Law

In Washington, Texas Senator John Cornyn is putting forward new legislation that targets the enforcement of Islamic Sharia law, labeling it a violation of civil rights. This comes amid ongoing discussions about a proposed Muslim-oriented community development in Texas.

The “Defeating Sharia Law in America Act” is intended to stop private entities from imposing Sharia law, which is a set of Islamic legal principles that often includes harsh penalties for various offenses, including theft and adultery.

Cornyn’s bill would block local governments and businesses from requiring adherence to Sharia law’s stringent regulations.

This issue has sparked considerable debate surrounding EPIC City, a large housing project in North Texas linked to the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC), one of the region’s largest mosques. The development has come under fire for allegations that it might restrict non-Muslims from purchasing or renting properties there.

Residents have expressed concerns that EPIC could implement Sharia law and have urged Texas Governor Greg Abbott to support legislation against it. In fact, a law banning “Islamic compounds” was recently signed by the governor.

Cornyn commented, “Sharia law contradicts the rights and values that define Texas and America. We need to eliminate this existential threat to our way of life.” He emphasized that his proposed legislation aims to hold accountable those trying to impose Sharia law and violate constitutional rights.

Previously, Cornyn urged the Justice Department to investigate EPIC for these concerns, but an inquiry last summer resulted in no charges or findings of violations against the Fair Housing Act.

While the enforcement of Sharia varies widely, critics argue it often entails human rights abuses, including prohibitions against homosexuality and restrictions on women’s freedoms. Some forms of Sharia are viewed as more moderate personal guidelines, while others can be strictly enforced by law in certain countries.

Concerns over Sharia law are not new, with debates about its compatibility with democratic principles occurring even at the European Court of Human Rights. Supporters of Sharia argue that it is commonly misunderstood.

Cornyn’s legislative push regarding Sharia law coincides with a competitive Republican primary for his Senate seat, where he’s challenged by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Representative Wesley Hunt.

Cornyn and Paxton have a history of tension, with Paxton trying to position himself further to the right and questioning Cornyn’s alignment with certain Republican ideologies. Many political strategists see Cornyn as the front-runner for the general election, especially given Paxton’s controversial past, including his 2023 impeachment related to preferential treatment for donors.

Recent polling indicates a tight race, with Paxton holding a small lead over Cornyn. The outcome will become clearer as the primary elections approach.

Meanwhile, the scrutiny of Sharia law continues in Congress, with recent discussions highlighting concerns about its implications. Senator Tommy Tuberville, a member of the Sharia-Free America Caucus, stated, “Sharia law is not a religion; it constitutes an ideology that poses a threat to freedom.” He called for action against what he sees as harmful extremism.
