Former NFL Player Charged with Girlfriend’s Murder
New details have come to light regarding a former NFL player accused of fatally assaulting his girlfriend earlier this month.
The individual in question, Daron Lee, a former player for the New York Jets, faces first-degree murder charges for the death of Gabriela Perpetuo in Ooltewah, Tennessee. A judge recently ruled that Lee will remain incarcerated without bail, with prosecutors considering the death penalty in this shocking case.
Detective Brian Lockhart from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office described the scene of the alleged incident, noting that the house the couple shared was in disarray, with blood evident throughout the premises. “There was a lot of stuff in the living room. The deceased was lying on his back on the floor. There was blood up the stairs, on the railing, on the walls, and in various locations throughout the home,” Lockhart reported.
Moreover, officials executing a search warrant found that Perpetuo sustained serious injuries, including a stab wound, bite marks, a significant head bruise, and a swollen eye, with dried blood found on her face and neck. They noted that there were alcohol bottles scattered in different rooms, along with a broken microwave. Bloodstains marked nearly every room and the stairs leading to the second floor.
During their investigation, authorities discovered signs of attempted cleanup, including Clorox wipes and cleaning supplies, hinting that Lee may have tried to erase the evidence. The coroner concluded that Perpetuo’s death resulted from blunt force trauma and classified it as a homicide, with her neck reportedly broken.
At the scene, Lee claimed he had fallen in the shower, despite having cuts on his hands and chest and injuries to his face.
Perpetuo’s parents have emphasized her warm character, recalling that she made friends easily and was deeply caring. They have initiated a wrongful death lawsuit against Lee, seeking $25 million in damages from his pension and other properties.
Interestingly, earlier this year, Lee was arrested on charges of assault against both his mother and the mother of his child. It seems his legal troubles are mounting, as he faces not only murder charges but also accusations of tampering with evidence.
Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp noted that Lee was previously on probation in Florida for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and attempted assault in Ohio, which adds layers to his complicated legal history.
