Duck Dynasty Family Reflects on Fame and Faith

The “Duck Dynasty” family has shared how the whirlwind of their television fame has reinforced their “deep roots of faith.” They chose to remain in the entertainment industry, believing they could positively influence culture.

Cory Robertson mentioned a speaker discussing how various institutions like schools, education, and church once had significant impacts on people’s lives. But now, with the rise of podcasts and entertainment, it feels like a smaller piece of the larger entertainment landscape. She added that their family realized this could be a means to lead people towards faith, especially since many Christians are wary of entertainment due to its darker perceptions.

Initially, when Cory agreed to participate in the reality show beginning in 2012, she faced skepticism from others who suggested their family would face negative outcomes. People warned, “You know what? Your kids are going to do drugs, you’re going to get divorced, what are you doing? Please stop.” But they decided they needed to be a part of the entertainment scene regardless.

Willie Robertson, Cory’s husband, chimed in, stating that if their show hadn’t existed, it was likely that someone else with a less positive message would take their place. He reflected, “Television is a competition among channels, and much of it feels either trivial or dark.” Their perspective was that if they didn’t step in, who would?

Cory noted that the experience was somewhat of a “whirlwind,” necessitating reliance on their faith. She expressed gratitude for being able to stay in their hometown and rely on their church community during such busy times, despite witnessing changes within the church structure.

During their time on the show, fans began approaching them even during church services, which they found a bit strange and somewhat “rude.” The situation opened their eyes to the significant role entertainment plays in shaping culture, as Cory emphasized, “For us, it opened our eyes to the power of entertainment and how it shapes our culture.”

Despite facing challenges, both Cory and Willie found strength in their faith. Willie mentioned that fame actually simplified his life and deepened his faith. He posed a rhetorical question about loyalty amidst wealth and fame, prompting deeper reflection.

There’s a general recognition from the family that their show made a cultural impact. Willie pointed out that ending their episodes with a prayer was not only rare but was meaningful to many viewers. “That was unusual…it resonated with people,” he noted.

Willie articulated that their family embodies a relatable, empathetic reality, which differs from the more sensationalist nature of typical reality shows. He captured how many fans found their show refreshing compared to other offerings on television.

Cory reflected on the show’s surprising humor, emphasizing the challenge of crafting something engaging. It came at a time when viewers were eager for uplifting content to enjoy as a family. She suggested that many have told them how the series positively affected their lives, noting stories of individuals who watched the show during significant life moments.

As they continue to encounter fans sharing heartfelt experiences related to the show, Cory reiterated their newfound understanding of entertainment’s role in shaping societal perceptions and values.
