FBI agents examine the safety of holster setup in the Nancy Guthrie case

Tucson Investigation into Nancy Guthrie Case

TUCSON, Ariz. – Former FBI agents are expressing doubt regarding the holster seen in surveillance footage connected to the Nancy Guthrie case. They describe the combination of a semi-automatic handgun with a revolver-style polyester holster as “incredibly amateurish and unsafe.”

During a segment on Fox News’ Hannity, Harvey Levin, founder of TMZ, shared his team’s analysis of the newly released surveillance video. They believe the suspect was using a semi-automatic handgun tucked into a soft polyester holster that usually accommodates revolvers. “Typically, if you have a polyester holster, you carry a revolver in it,” Levin explained to Sean Hannity.

While acknowledging that he isn’t a firearms expert, Levin mentioned that experts in the field have found this combination unusual. TMZ has reached out to shooting ranges in the Tucson area to find any witnesses who may recall someone with this mismatched equipment. However, Levin remarked, “We couldn’t find anything,” noting that both the FBI and Sheriff’s Department are pursuing similar lines of inquiry.

Concerns Over Safety and Suitability

John Nantz, a former FBI agent, emphasized the inadequacy of the holster, stating it could pose a risk. “The holster obviously doesn’t fit a semi-automatic pistol. It’s incredibly amateurish and unsafe. The gun can easily fall out of the holster. No one, even with minimal training, would carry a gun that way,” he explained.

Trained professionals typically use molded Kydex or leather holsters specifically designed for their firearm models, complete with retention systems to secure the weapon. Former FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jason Pack highlighted how Kydex holsters, made of hard plastic, are intended to “click” into place, and leather holsters are custom-shaped for specific firearms.

Pack added, “I’ve never seen anyone carry a holster on the fly like that before,” noting how the depicted holster is inconsistent with the rigid, model-specific holsters common in law enforcement. He also pointed out that inexpensive nylon and polyester holsters are readily available at major retailers and often used by civilian gun owners.

At this point, authorities have not indicated whether the characteristics of the holster are significant to the ongoing investigation.
