Though the 2028 Summer Olympics are still a bit away, Katie Ledecky is already gearing up for them.

It’s not surprising that the 14-time Olympic medalist leads a healthy and balanced lifestyle, dedicating around 30 hours weekly to training in the pool.

“Eating well, getting enough sleep, and recovering after workouts—those are all crucial,” the 28-year-old champion swimmer mentioned. “It’s really about a holistic perspective.”

Her grocery shopping routine is equally strict, guided by tips she picked up from her mother.

“When I go to the store, I’m focusing on easy-to-prepare foods like fresh produce, whole grains, and tasty snacks,” she explained.

Ledecky finds shopping more straightforward by planning ahead with “non-negotiables” such as essential nutrients and eggs already on her list.

“I can zip through the grocery store because I know exactly what I need, and I can think about the week in advance,” she added.

Returning from a demanding training day or while traveling, she feels prepared for anything that comes her way.

“If I know I’m arriving late or there won’t be many food options, I pack snacks or look for a quick meal,” she noted. “Planning ahead helps to avoid surprises, and it allows me to anticipate the unexpected.”

Ledecky thinks it’s beneficial to have a shopping list and maintain good nutrition, whether you’re training for major events or just having a busy day at work.

“We all have packed schedules and goals we want to achieve,” she continued. “So having a plan and eating well can really help maintain energy throughout the day.”

Ever since her Olympic debut at 15 in 2012, Ledecky has been a force in swimming, becoming the most awarded female American Olympian by the 2024 Paris Games.

“I focus on being consistent in my training and preparation,” she mentioned. “In many ways, I treat every sport like it’s the Olympics.”

To excel in the pool, she knows that top-notch nutrition is essential too.

Whenever she travels, she makes it a point to stick to familiar foods.

“You don’t need to be training for a gold medal to have the energy of a champion,” Ledecky remarked. “Whether you’re hitting the gym, facing a long workday, or simply looking to feel more energized, starting with better food choices really matters.”

Balancing her diet and regular training is important, especially with the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics on her mind.

“I make sure I get plenty of protein and nutrients from eggs, along with carbohydrates. Fruits, vegetables, and hydration are also key,” she shared, being a nine-time Olympic gold medalist.

Ledecky consistently emphasizes planning and preparation, particularly regarding balanced meals.

Regardless of her schedule or competition, she relies on steady nutrition and one personal habit to stay ready.

“I keep a diary, so I have numerous notebooks to refer back to,” she noted. “I believe those, together with consistent routines throughout the training season, really boost my confidence.”

This consistency has aided her through even the most nerve-wracking moments just before her race.

“If you feel like you’ve done everything to prepare, you’ll be calm and confident behind the blocks,” Ledecky explained. “There’s always some tension, but it’s exciting; it reminds you to be as prepared as possible.”
