Chris Paul ends his remarkable 21-year career in the NBA

Chris Paul Reveals Retirement Plans

Chris Paul has shared his intentions regarding retirement.

The 40-year-old point guard announced on Friday that he plans to retire after completing his 21st season. Interestingly, the Raptors waived him on the same day, as reported by ESPN.

Earlier in the season, Paul had mentioned that this would be his final year in the NBA.

In his emotional farewell, Paul expressed his mixed feelings. “This is it! After 21 years, I’m stepping away from basketball. As I write this, it’s hard to really know what to feel, but this time – to most people’s surprise – I don’t have an answer!” he shared in a post on Instagram. “But mostly, I am filled with so much joy and gratitude!”

He emphasized that while his journey as an NBA player is ending, basketball will always be a significant part of his life.

This season began with the Clippers, the team he played for primarily from 2011 to 2017, but he was traded to the Raptors following a conflict with the Los Angeles team.

Interestingly, he never took the court for the Raptors before his release.

Reflecting on his lengthy career, Paul stated, “I have spent 30 years and more than half of my life in the NBA. It’s crazy to even say that!! Playing basketball for a living has been an incredible blessing, but it’s also come with a lot of responsibility. I’ve embraced it all. The good and the bad.”

His farewell message stirred up memories, as he recalled injuries and experiences like playing basketball in the snow at the YMCA.

He took a moment to thank his teammates, coaches, and executives who have been a part of his journey.

“It makes me feel really good to know that I have played and treated this game with the utmost respect since the day my father taught me this game,” he wrote.

Looking ahead, Paul is eager to devote time to his family. “So now, with all the gratitude I can… it’s time for me to show up for others in another way,” he noted. He acknowledged that being home with his family during the last season was crucial. “Those six years took a huge toll on all of us, but I know it had to end. And right now, I know in my heart that the best teammates I could have are Jada, Chris II, and Cam!!”
