The reason Carlos Correa declined Bad Bunny's WBC insurance proposal

Bad Bunny’s Gesture for Carlos Correa at World Baseball Classic

Bad Bunny, the famous musician, offered to help cover Carlos Correa’s insurance for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. However, Major League Baseball, the Astros organization, and Correa’s agent, Scott Boras, advised against it.

“They all told me it wasn’t a good idea,” Correa said in an interview with The Athletic. “I heard there were situations where the insurance providers I was looking at weren’t actually reimbursing players. So, with MLB, the team, and my agent all warning me, I felt I couldn’t go against their advice.”

Despite not being able to play in the tournament, Correa appreciated Bad Bunny’s involvement. “It really means a lot that he’s so engaged,” he commented. “He tried his best…I genuinely value his effort.”

Bad Bunny, known as Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, had previously made a similar offer to cover Francisco Lindor’s insurance, but that, too, was turned down by the World Baseball Classic’s insurance provider.

Team Puerto Rico has faced significant challenges with insurance matters, not only affecting Correa but also impacting players like Blue Jays pitcher José Berríos and Twins catcher Victor Caratini.

This insurance issue was substantial enough to nearly cause Puerto Rico to withdraw from the Classic. They are set to host the first round in San Juan from March 6 to 11, joined by Canada, Colombia, Cuba, and Panama.

The reluctance from insurers seems to stem from a series of notable injuries during past tournaments. Notably, former Mets closer Edwin Diaz suffered a severe knee injury in the last WBC, sidelining him for the entire 2023 season. Additionally, José Altuve fractured his thumb during this year’s competition, which meant months of recovery.
