Measles Outbreaks Across the U.S.

Cases of measles have now been confirmed in at least 21 U.S. states, with outbreaks spreading throughout the nation.

At Ave Maria University close to Naples, Florida, the number of measles cases has risen to nearly 60. One unvaccinated sophomore shared with CBS News that he experienced symptoms before receiving a positive test result.

“Honestly, at first, it felt like a head cold,” he recounted. “Then I noticed a rash, followed by a sore throat and coughing.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Raul Enad, working at a clinic near the campus, reported treating two cases—both a student and a professor, who had been vaccinated.

“The professor had been in contact with a student who had a severe case,” Enad explained. “She would have been much sicker if not for her vaccination.”

In a statement on their website, the university emphasized that their top priority is ensuring the health and safety of everyone in their campus community.

Rising Cases Nationwide

The U.S. finds itself at risk of losing its measles-elimination status for the first time in over 20 years.

“It’s just part of the deal when our borders are a bit porous for international travel,” stated Ralph Abraham, principal deputy director at the CDC, last month. “There are communities choosing not to vaccinate, and that’s their choice.”

As of now, CBS News has reported over 1,000 confirmed cases across the country in 2026, which is about half of the total for all of 2025.

Just three years ago, there were only two cases of the virus during this same period, according to CDC data.

Currently, South Carolina is experiencing the largest outbreak, having recorded over 900 cases since September.

The CDC advises that children get their first dose of the MMR vaccine between 12 and 15 months of age.

“I think this serves as a good reminder for parents to ensure their kids get the measles shot,” remarked Dr. Marty Makary, FDA commissioner. “We promote what we consider essential vaccines, and measles is definitely one of them.”

Symptoms of Measles

According to the CDC, the symptoms of measles typically appear 7 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.

Common symptoms may include:

  • High fever (potentially surpassing 104° F)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose (coryza)
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Rash

In some situations, serious complications can arise, such as pneumonia or encephalitis, which is swelling of the brain.
