Victor Wembanyama expresses his emotions during the Spurs' Game 7 celebration

Victor Wembanyama kept quiet after Game 5, leaving the Paycom Center before addressing any reporters.

His post-game comments were minimal during an on-court interview with NBC following the Spurs’ Game 6 victory.

However, after Game 7, in which Wembanyama propelled the Spurs to an exciting finish in the Western Conference Finals by taking down the top-seeded Oklahoma City, he expressed a flood of emotions that spoke volumes.

As the Spurs triumphed 111-103 against the Thunder in Oklahoma City, Wembanyama was clearly overwhelmed. He embraced his teammates and, at one moment, buried his head in his hands, shouting joyfully as he traipsed around the court once the final buzzer rang.

“Winning the Larry O’Brien Award is a dream I’ve had since childhood,” he shared with reporters during the post-game press conference. “Now, there’s a real opportunity to make that dream a reality. You never know when you’ll get another chance. For me, the day we win will feel like everything I’ve ever wanted. It’s hard to find the words, really—it feels like the essence of my life.”

It’s understandable that Wembanyama, a standout in his third season and a fresh face in the league, is steering the Spurs toward their first Finals appearance since 2014, the last time they clinched a title.

The towering 7-foot-4 center placed third in the MVP voting and became the first player to unanimously be named Defensive Player of the Year during the regular season, boasting averages of 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and an NBA-leading 3.1 blocks per game.

This success has translated to the postseason as well; Wembanyama averaged 23.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 3.7 blocks throughout the playoffs, contributing 22 points and seven rebounds in Game 7 alone.

Now, San Antonio stands four victories away from capturing its fifth title of the century, with Game 1 set for Wednesday against the Knicks, who previously defeated the Spurs in the NBA Cup Finals held in neutral Las Vegas last December.

Wembanyama emphasized his determination, stating in the press conference, “I really want to win. It feels like my life depends on it.”
