Cruise Passengers Witness Dramatic Rescue in Kauai

Passengers aboard the Emerald Princess cruise ship encountered a tense situation while approaching Kauai this week. On February 10th, just as the ship was nearing Nawiliwili Port, a port pilot tragically fell into the water after slipping from a ladder attached to a smaller pilot boat.

A passenger on the cruise, Walter Biscardi Jr., who also runs a travel agency, reported on Instagram that the conditions were quite harrowing. “The pilot slipped while trying to board the ship in very rough weather,” he noted, elaborating on the difficulties faced during the attempted boarding.

Witnesses observed the pilot struggling to maintain his footing as he made several attempts to board the ship before ultimately falling about 10 to 20 feet into the turbulent sea. Fortunately, the boat’s crew acted swiftly, and video footage captured the pilot being pulled back into the smaller boat just minutes later.

Despite the alarming incident, there were no reported injuries. A statement from Biscardi on social media highlighted the successful recovery, saying, “Fortunately, the boat crew was able to safely retrieve him.” Following the emergency, the cruise’s stop in Kauai was canceled, and the ship continued on to Maui for its next scheduled port of call.

The incident has certainly left an impact on passengers. A guest mentioned feeling grateful for the quick response and professionalism of the crew, noting, “Thank God for a quick recovery.” Others expressed their disbelief at the intense conditions during the attempted docking, with comments about the strong winds and choppy waters complicating the arrival process.

Trish Walters, another passenger, humorously recounted the turbulent experience through social media, stating, “It’s very windy and a little scary.” She described how the ship needed more space to maneuver safely due to the challenging weather, ultimately leading to the decision to skip the Kauai stop.

As the day unfolded, concerns for the pilot were met with relief, and many passengers expressed their admiration for the crew’s handling of such a serious situation. “We want to thank our pilots for their safety and the work they all do to make our cruise a great experience,” Biscardi remarked, reflecting a sense of appreciation despite the circumstances.
