Putin is beginning to feel the pressure — it's time for Trump to apply more pressure.

With President Vladimir Putin’s war effort appearing to falter, there’s a growing call to escalate pressure on the Kremlin to bring the conflict in Ukraine to a close.

Actions by President Donald Trump, such as targeting the “Shadow Fleet” tankers and imposing new tariffs on Russian oil importers, seem to be making an impact. This is reflected in Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s complaints about the U.S. supposedly having no interest in compelling Ukraine to agree to a de facto surrender, which, according to Trump, is not the case.

It does raise a question, though: why is American intervention needed if Russia is currently gaining ground in the war?

Lavrov expressed frustration, claiming that the U.S. aims for economic dominance, signaling that the pressure on Putin is intensifying.

Thanks to sanctions that have even reached India’s oil imports, Russia is facing a crunch in foreign currency. In a sign of desperation, the Kremlin has begun to portray oil shipments to Cuba as “humanitarian aid,” going against Trump’s earlier cautions against supporting the Cuban government.

It seems that, fundamentally, Trump is aiming for a peace agreement that brings an end to years of violence while ensuring that Putin doesn’t gain a victory he can’t achieve on his own.

Furthermore, the Russian government has cited an imaginary counteroffensive from Ukraine to justify its inability to secure the territories it claims to have captured. Frontline commanders appear hesitant to report their setbacks to higher authorities.

Poor Vlad. It turns out his military has been using stolen Starlink terminals to coordinate drone strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure. In response, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is cutting off Russian access to Starlink, significantly impacting Moscow’s command capabilities.

Russia’s complaints over this move suggest they believe preventing their access to Starlink somehow breaches international law.

Despite the mounting losses, Putin continues to commit more troops to the fight, targeting civilians to break Ukraine’s spirit. Yet, these tactics aren’t yielding results as Western support for Ukraine solidifies and the economic situation worsens for Russia.

It certainly sounds like the Kremlin’s representatives are starting to feel the heat.

Trump has set June as a new deadline for achieving a peace deal. To ensure that Putin responds effectively, maintaining pressure seems essential.
