Ricky Stenhouse Jr excited as he targets a second Daytona 500 victory

Daytona 500 Weekend: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Aims for Historic Second Win

The much-anticipated Daytona 500 weekend is underway, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has his sights set on making history.

Stenhouse, who clinched the victory in the 2023 race, is now among only 13 drivers to win the Daytona 500 twice. After taking a break since the season opener, he feels “pumped up” and ready to dive back into competitive racing.

“I’m ready to go. My team and I, we’ve worked really hard, and we’re all set,” Stenhouse shared in a recent conversation.

While he hasn’t drastically altered how he perceives himself as a driver since his last win three years ago, Stenhouse acknowledges the Daytona 500’s significance in building a driver’s legacy.

“I think it probably shifted how a lot of fans view me. It’s significant to have a Daytona 500 championship under your belt. That’s what we have been aiming for,” he reflected. “I first raced in the 500 in 2012, and finally ticking that box in 2023 felt monumental, especially for a smaller team. It really set the stage for a great season.” He added that he still feels motivated from that achievement, even if last season wasn’t quite what they had hoped for, emphasizing a strong confidence heading into this year’s race.

Since then, Stenhouse has only claimed one more victory, at the 2024 YellaWood 500, recognizing the relentless challenge of winning in NASCAR.

“It’s kind of like golf; in a good season, winning two or three races is typical, while a few even hit five or six. It’s tough out there,” he explained. “For our team, with just 35 employees, we know our limitations and resources well.” He mentioned that consistently finishing in the top 15 would feel like a major win for them and encourages ongoing motivation during the season. Each week presents a new challenge, and when things go awry, the key is to regroup and push forward.

As for how to avoid particularly tough weeks? Well, preparation is essential. “You need a car that you’re comfortable with, one that allows you to navigate effectively,” Stenhouse noted. He emphasized the importance of strategy—fuel conservation and track position are crucial. Timing during pit stops—with solid execution from the pit crew—can make all the difference when seeking a win at Daytona.

“In the last few years at Daytona, having a stellar Gasman during that final pit stop has been key. Just a few seconds can mean everything,” he added, reflecting on the unpredictability of racing and how vital it is to avoid wrecks along the way.
