Reasons the NFL is unhappy with NBC's NBA deal

NFL Expresses Frustration Over NBC’s NBA Deal

The NFL is apparently feeling “frustrated” regarding NBC’s substantial television agreement with the NBA. John Uhland from the Packers mentioned that Roger Goodell and others are not particularly pleased about the financial gains rival leagues are raking in from Sunday night broadcasts.

“NFL executives are feeling quite frustrated. This NBA deal—it’s frustrating to them,” Uhland shared on a recent podcast episode. He pointed out, “The fact that NBC is shelling out more money for ‘Sunday Night Basketball’ compared to ‘Sunday Night Football’ is infuriating for NFL executives. So, will they start applying pressure for a better NBA contract?”

This season marks the return of NBA games to NBC as part of an 11-year media rights agreement, which will cost the network $2.5 billion annually.

Currently, NBC pays around $2 billion for its NFL media package, which includes “Sunday Night Football.” It’s worth noting that the NFL usually has a significantly larger viewership compared to the NBA.

Furthermore, NBC has recently entered into a $600 million deal with MLB, securing rights to “Sunday Night Baseball” and wild-card playoff games for the next three seasons, alongside existing agreements for various sports, including college football, golf, the WNBA, the Olympics, and Premier League Soccer.

Looking ahead, with the NFL contemplating the possibility of opting out of their media rights in 2029 and 2030, there may be tough choices ahead for NBC, potentially leading to a hefty financial commitment.

As Ourand noted, “Ultimately, this will lead to each network paying the NFL significantly more. We’ve often discussed the divide between leagues—those with ample resources and those without. If these rights are exercised, the divides may widen further as the Premier League could offer all its games on the market.” He added, “NBC will need to disburse more cash, not just for the NFL but also for the NBA. Can they even manage something like a weekend morning Premier League show? Baseball season is on the horizon too.”
