Prince William and Kate Middleton Prioritize Family Amid Health Challenges

A royal expert has noted that for Kate and Prince William, their royal responsibilities have taken a backseat to parenting. This shift became particularly evident when William reduced his royal engagements during Kate’s cancer treatment.

Russell Myers, the royal editor for the Mirror and author of “William and Catherine: An Intimate Inside Story,” stated, “Behind the scenes, it was brutal for William.” He described how William felt as if everything had shifted drastically after both Kate and his father, King Charles III, were diagnosed with cancer early in 2024.

“He had to juggle a lot of emotions,” Myers said, emphasizing William’s struggles in balancing care for his wife and father while contemplating how his public role might evolve.

Myers also shared that this immense pressure stemmed from William’s deep concern for their three children. He mentioned, “Witnessing him step back from public life reveals much about William and Catherine as individuals. Family has always been their priority.” She added that while public duties matter, family comes first—if family is stable, everything else falls into place.

In a book excerpt released in March, Myers recounted how the couple spoke to their children, explaining the situation transparently. An aide noted, “‘He was quite firm when Kate was admitted to hospital,’ referring to her two-week stay in January 2024 for what was termed “planned abdominal surgery.” The couple assured their kids everything would be alright and that Kate would need some time for recovery.

Even during her hospital stay, Kate maintained contact with her family through video calls, showing interest in the children’s school activities and asking how William was managing at home.

Life seemed calm on the surface, but away from their children, William was deeply contemplative. The diagnosis of both his father and wife cast a shadow over the family’s normalcy.

By March, medical staff informed Kate that she had cancer following her surgery. Myers noted, “They recommended immediate preventive chemotherapy for her best chance at recovery.” Friends revealed that while she was initially in shock, Kate focused on her husband and children.

“Duty is important to them, but it has to come second when it comes to family, because if they get family right, everything else will follow.”

William later expressed to a friend that he felt “disbelief” upon hearing about Kate’s diagnosis. The rapid succession of his father’s and wife’s health crises weighed heavily on him. Together, the couple chose to inform their kids in an optimistic manner.

After discussing it with their children, Kate decided to make a public disclosure about her health, believing it could provide hope to others facing similar challenges.

On March 22, 2024, Kate shared the news from a serene setting surrounded by flowers, a moment that resonated worldwide, reminiscent of major historical announcements.

Despite feeling overwhelmed, William worked hard to keep things as normal as possible for Charlotte and Louis. The couple’s commitment was evident; while he handled school routines, Kate’s family frequently visited, ensuring a steady flow of love and support for the children.

A friend remarked that the royal couple was keen on shielding their children from the turmoil of their circumstances. William’s dedication to keeping the kids engaged and his positive outlook amid adversity garnered gratitude from those close to them.

In September 2024, Kate announced she had completed her cancer treatments and celebrated that she was in remission in January of the following year.

Recently, on Valentine’s Day, the couple shared a heartfelt message on social media, commemorating the day with a cherished photo taken by a friend.
