From Activist to Content Creator: Xavier Dursault’s Journey
Xavier DuRousseau, a conservative content creator known for his work with PragerU, has quite the story. He engages millions online, sharing his insights on politics and culture as he encourages viewers to “walk with him” through Los Angeles while sipping Erewhon smoothies. But Dursault wasn’t always on the right; he began his journey as a progressive activist, even marching for Black Lives Matter.
In a recent conversation, the 29-year-old host of “Respectfully Xavier” reflected on the transition from those protests to becoming a conservative voice in the media landscape. “Hearing about my past with BLM protests makes me cringe; it was pure chaos,” he shared.
Raised in a liberal family on the South Side of Chicago, Dursault was exposed to “Marxist” ideas early on. He later moved to a rural area in Illinois, where he frequently encountered messages emphasizing racial differences. His college years saw him becoming more involved in progressive movements and deepening his commitment to social justice, eventually becoming an activist.
“Before the George Floyd protests, I’d often shared content focused on microaggressions and various forms of oppression,” he remarked. However, his trajectory changed dramatically in 2020. Chosen from 25,000 social justice activists, he participated in Netflix’s reality show “The Circle,” a competition dependent on social media interaction.
Initially, Dursault planned to engage with liberal perspectives, but as he learned more, he had a personal awakening. “I unintentionally took the red pill,” he quipped. By the end of the filming, he felt more aligned with conservative ideologies. “I had studied history through a clearer lens, free of confirmation bias,” he noted, which propelled him to begin sharing his evolving views.
For Dursault, a pivotal moment was realizing the financial flow within BLM. He questioned where donations were directed, particularly as he noted Breonna Taylor’s mother raising concerns about the organization’s finances. “Whenever I brought up these funding issues, people dismissed my inquiries as out of scope,” he recalled, emphasizing the importance of tracking where money leads in determining an organization’s priorities.
Recent investigations have surfaced regarding potential mismanagement of funds by BLM leaders, particularly during the peak of donations following the George Floyd incident.
“It became clear that this wasn’t merely an issue of police reform,” Dursault explained. “Seeing the discrepancies was like a domino effect, leading to the realization that BLM was not just flawed—it was a fraudulent organization allied with the left.” Now, he aims to inspire others to think critically and question established narratives. “Many are too afraid to ask questions or think independently,” he said, expressing his goal to change that.
This shift hasn’t come without personal consequences. “Some family members have distanced themselves,” he shared, highlighting a rift with his father and a brother who still holds misconceptions about his views. Despite this, he noted that a few family members have begun to acknowledge his perspective over time.
Dursault’s popular “Walk with Me” videos feature casual setups where he tackles serious topics in an accessible way. “It’s critical for me to connect with those who may not typically engage with political issues,” he said, noting the importance of drawing attention to real-world challenges.
Advocacy groups like BLM, according to financial data, have seen mixed results regarding their charitable contributions. The organization raised approximately $87 million but spent less than a third on external nonprofits. As Dursault continues to navigate this complex conversation, he hopes to encourage thoughtful discussion and inspire others to step outside their perceived boundaries.
