New study reveals Washington Dulles is the costliest airport in the US at $475.

You might be surprised to learn that the airport you choose can significantly impact your flight costs. A recent evaluation assessed U.S. airports based on average domestic airfares, revealing notable price variations depending on the departure location.

The analysis analyzed airfare data from the 200 busiest U.S. airports, looking at ticket prices across different regions and airlines for the first half of 2025. This information was gathered from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) to rank the airports accordingly.

Expensive and Affordable Major Airports

According to the findings, Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) tops the list as the priciest major airport in the U.S., with average domestic airfares hitting about $475 early in 2025. Following closely is Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) at approximately $461, with Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) also high on the list, averaging around $445.

On the other hand, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is noted as the most economical, with fares averaging around $281. Orlando International Airport (MCO) isn’t far off, with a typical domestic fare of roughly $289. Additionally, Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) offers average fares near $291.

Interestingly, the report points out that not all travelers are fortunate enough to live near these more affordable airports. It seems that those with flexible departure options might snag better deals by opting for smaller, secondary airports instead of major hubs. For instance, St. Petersburg-Clearwater (PIE), Orlando Sanford (SFB), and Punta Gorda (PGD) all show average fares below $150.

Smaller airports, such as Mid-America’s St. Louis Airport (BLV) and Rickenbacker International Airport (LCK), are among these cost-effective choices, primarily served by ultra-low-cost airlines. The report does caution that airfares can fluctuate widely even within the same metropolitan area, affecting travel plans and expenses. Variations in parking fees and travel times should also be factored in when deciding on an airport.

In summary, while there are opportunities for savings, it requires planning, like booking in advance and watching out for baggage fees on budget airlines. And, of course, it’s good to be aware that the federal government recently faced a partial shutdown, which could affect operations at TSA and subsequently impact traveler experiences at numerous airports.
