A recent discovery in Utah has sparked curiosity about a 150-year-old alcohol bottle. The artifact was unearthed this summer in the ruins of Alta, which was once a thriving mining town before transforming into a ski resort hotspot.

This historical bottle made its way to High West Distillery, the state’s first legal distillery since the 1870s. When Tara Lindley, the Director of Sensory and Product Development at High West, examined the contents, she noted a distinct “oxidized fruit scent.” It’s interesting how scent can evoke such vivid memories, isn’t it?

High West’s Director Isaac Winter added his thoughts on the liquid’s profile. He described it as “fruity,” mentioning that there might still be “a little bit of leather” in it, hinting at its age. Initially baffled by the contents, experts are now leaning toward the conclusion that it may be apple cider.

In a conversation with FOX 13 this week, Winter expressed enthusiasm about the findings. He mentioned seeing some esters—these organic compounds—indicating that apples might be the base ingredient. But, the results are still not definitive.

The team plans to send samples to an independent lab for further analysis, including tests to confirm what they suspect is a low alcohol content. They also intend to check for specific compounds associated with apples, like malic acid. You know, it’s kind of fascinating how much science can reveal about something so simple.

Winter mentioned aspirations to recreate the drink as well, saying, “It’s probably a mix of different microorganisms, including bacteria and yeast.” It’s a blend of science and tradition, really. But they also want to ensure it tastes good, which, frankly, is the most important part!

This discovery adds to a rich history of archaeological finds related to food and beverages. For instance, in Türkiye, archaeologists uncovered 5,000-year-old barley, alongside more recent discoveries like preserved food remains in Pompeii.
