Nick Castellanos Reflects on Phillies Experience

Nick Castellanos doesn’t harbor any resentment toward the Phillies regarding the way his time in Philadelphia ended, but he acknowledges there are valuable lessons from the whole experience.

One significant takeaway for Castellanos came from an incident in June, as detailed by The Athletic, where he brought a beer into the dugout and had some harsh words for manager Rob Thomas and hitting coach Kevin Long.

After being released last week, Castellanos expressed regret over the incident in an open letter directed to Phillies fans, sharing his reflections during training camp with his new team, the Padres.

“When I said I would learn from this, I think I was just caught up in my feelings at the moment,” Castellanos shared with reporters at Padres’ spring training in Arizona. “[Moving forward], maybe if something bothers me or seems unproductive, it’s better to address it right away rather than letting it build over time. And as I work on this, I plan to be less led by my emotions.”

Just days after his release, Castellanos signed a one-year deal with the Padres, and he seems hopeful about his new path in San Diego.

Reflecting back on a specific incident in Philadelphia, he mentioned a time when he expressed his frustration quite vocally in September.

“In that moment, I was just being honest about how I felt,” he stated. “I wasn’t trying to show outward discontent. I kept a lot to myself but answered truthfully when asked, and I guess people interpreted it differently.”

He added, “I do wish one thing were different: that the team had won a World Series title.”

Interestingly, Castellanos noted, “Winning, I believe, fixes everything,” emphasizing his desire for more victories.

While the Phillies reached the World Series in 2022, they ultimately fell short against the Astros.

Now, Castellanos is set to make his mark on the West Coast, likely seeing action as a designated hitter, along with some time in the outfield and at first base.
