Hiker Dies on Mount Marcy
Authorities have reported that a 21-year-old hiker lost his life after falling from a trail on Mount Marcy, which is the highest peak in New York State. The incident occurred near the summit, and the victim, who was from New Jersey, was discovered deceased on Thursday night.
Details about the hiker’s identity and gender have yet to be disclosed. A spokesperson from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) shared that a fellow hiker called 911 around 3:05 p.m., explaining that he had slipped and couldn’t make it back to the trail.
The hiker brought a dog with him, although it’s unclear if he had companions or what led to his fall. Efforts to locate him involved two forest rangers attempting to search from a state police helicopter, but poor visibility due to thick cloud cover obstructed their view at the summit.
As the situation unfolded, one ranger was dropped off at a nearby Marcy Dam outpost around 6:06 p.m. to initiate a ground search. They made their way to the hiker’s last known whereabouts and, tragically, found him deceased at approximately 9:51 p.m. Fortunately, the dog was located alive and safely retrieved, although inclement weather initially hindered the recovery of the hiker’s body.
On Friday morning, a state police helicopter was able to transport two forest rangers to the area, allowing them to recover the hiker’s remains. The NYSDEC expressed its condolences to the family in a statement.
