Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has expressed her admiration for Gavin Newsom, seemingly excited about the idea of him stepping into a presidential role. At 85, she’s in her last term before retirement and thinks the California governor could be an outstanding president.
One of Pelosi’s former aides mentioned, “She’s a huge fan of Gavin and isn’t easily impressed. Usually, when she sees potential in someone, she’s right.” Over her nearly 40 years in Congress, Pelosi hasn’t held back her support for Newsom, who is eyeing a potential presidential run in 2028.
Pelosi has noted, “I’ve watched him grow in politics and he’s built a great family. It’s been a joy for those of us who care about him to see him develop.” With the presidential campaign heating up, she won’t be leading the House of Representatives this time, which might give her the leeway to back her preferred candidate even ahead of the primaries.
Newsom is making waves on various platforms, having recently spoken at high-profile events like the World Economic Forum and the Munich Security Conference, and he’s also set to release a memoir shortly.
Interestingly, both Pelosi and Newsom come from San Francisco and share a family connection—Pelosi’s brother-in-law was married to Newsom’s aunt.
Requests for comments have been sent to both Pelosi and Newsom’s offices.
