What Christians Should Understand About the Effects of the Government Shutdown with the DHS

With the looming government shutdown, it feels almost theatrical in Washington, D.C., complete with a sense of foreboding. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is caught in the middle of this standoff. As of now, there’s been no agreement reached, and discussions will pause for the week since funding for DHS will expire at midnight Saturday, coinciding with a break for both the House and Senate. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune mentioned that Congress might reconvene if a compromise surfaces.

Interestingly, many lawmakers are attending defense conferences in Munich, Germany, despite the significant concerns regarding America’s security.

The irony of prioritizing Europe’s security over America’s

Senator Rick Scott commented, “Schumer is at the center of this. He seems more focused on sending people to Munich than on making sure DHS is funded.” Representative Mark Amodei echoed this sentiment, saying that the Senate had expressed a desire for everyone to remain in town just last week, yet now they’re off to Munich for conferences. “We sent the bill… isn’t that something to be proud of?”

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole shared his thoughts too, mentioning, “Munich is lovely. I’ve been there many times, and the beer is fantastic. But there’s really no need to attend a defense conference when there’s a pressing issue back home.”

Impact on ICE, CBP, and American citizens

Another layer of irony is that the shutdown won’t significantly impact ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which are at the heart of the issue. Funds for these agencies were secured through legislation that President Trump signed a while back, with additional financing from other sources.

As it stands, about 90% of government operations will continue, even if Congress can’t finalize funding by the week’s end, according to House Appropriations subcommittee member Henry Cuellar from Texas. Affected agencies will include TSA, FEMA, the Coast Guard, Cybersecurity, and the Secret Service. While these organizations will keep running, many employees might not receive their paychecks. For TSA employees, this could begin as soon as mid-March, and travelers can expect longer lines.

Lawmakers concerned about the ramifications of the shutdown

On the potential fallout of the shutdown, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Andrew R. Gabarino emphasized, “We’re at a critical point for our homeland security, and further funding cuts could have even graver consequences than before. With several major events on the horizon, including the World Cup and the America’s 250th anniversary, the stakes are high.” He expressed regret about the prospect of frontline workers potentially missing another paycheck.

Chairman Cole stated, “If Chuck Schumer and others view this as a tactic, they’re mistaken; a shutdown isn’t a strategy. It jeopardizes national security and affects families across the nation.”

Mark Amodei also conveyed his frustration, highlighting the risks of compromising national security for political disagreements: “Progressive Democrats, under Chuck Schumer’s leadership, are insisting that Congress weaken domestic immigration enforcement or face a shutdown of the DHS. Threatening a shutdown is putting our essential national security functions in jeopardy.”
