Bill Maher refers to viewers who stopped watching after the Trump dinner as 'idiots'

Bill Maher’s Dinner with Trump Sparks Controversy

Comedian Bill Maher recently expressed his frustration with those who stopped watching his show after he dined with former President Donald Trump. In an interview with CNN’s Elex Michaelson, Maher described these individuals as “idiots,” emphasizing that their reaction was primarily emotional. “They always ask the wrong questions, like, ‘Why would it be bad to have dinner with Donald Trump?’” he remarked.

Maher had the dinner with Trump in April 2025, a move that garnered significant backlash from liberal circles. In response, Trump criticized the encounter on Truth Social, labeling it a “total waste of time.” Maher maintained that the focus should be on what he discussed post-dinner rather than the mere act of dining with the president.

He pointed out that if he had accepted Trump’s views and changed his critical approach afterward, it might be warranted to stop watching his show. “But that didn’t happen,” he insisted.

Despite the dinner’s controversy, Maher stated he hasn’t held back from criticizing leftists when necessary and continues to scrutinize Trump as well. Reflecting on the dinner, which lasted about three hours, he felt that although many were angered by his honest recounting of the experience, his portrayal highlighted Trump’s distinctly different personality.

Interestingly, Maher shared that Trump occasionally “rants” to him through emails, suggesting an ongoing, albeit complex relationship. He reiterated that both actors and politicians should engage in conversations instead of yelling from the sidelines.

Maher concluded by acknowledging Trump’s ability to make people behave foolishly, noting that having a dialogue is crucial, as the alternatives might be even less productive. “What are the downsides?” he asked, provoking thought about the need for communication in a politically charged atmosphere.
