Are common foods harming our children? Casey DeSantis reveals hidden toxins in pantry essentials

Florida’s Initiative on Food Safety

“People have a right not to be poisoned. It seems obvious, yet many in the food industry don’t seem to agree,” expressed a host on Blaze TV, Allie Beth Stuckey.

This sentiment is part of the Florida Department of Health’s proactive strategy. The program, known as Healthy Florida First, is spearheaded by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, First Lady Casey DeSantis, and Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo. It involves independent testing of prevalent foods for harmful substances like heavy metals, pesticides such as glyphosate, and other dangerous toxins. The goal is to ensure transparency and accountability, promoting a healthier food system and enabling families to make informed choices.

Recent tests in Florida have uncovered contaminants in many common foods, from candy to bread, and even powdered milk.

In a recent “Relatable” episode, Allie spoke with Casey DeSantis about some of the most shocking findings in this initiative.

Concerns Over Powdered Milk

“When we received the results for baby formula, we were shocked and concerned to find that 17 out of 24 samples showed concerning levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury,” stated DeSantis. This issue has also been highlighted by data from Consumer Reports, revealing that well-known infant formula brands have been found to be contaminated.

Some of these brands include popular names such as Enfamil and Similac, which tested positive for various harmful substances. “Heavy metals don’t easily leave your body,” emphasized DeSantis, pointing out that early exposure can heighten cancer risk later in life.

“It’s unfair for mothers to navigate store shelves, unsure of which products might be safer,” she added.

The Issue with Bread

Many well-known bread brands have been found to contain glyphosate, a chemical herbicide frequently used worldwide. DeSantis remarked, “It’s Roundup. It kills plants, so there’s no reason for it to be in the food we consume.”

Dr. Ladapo, the state’s Surgeon General, warned that consuming glyphosate can disrupt cellular functioning, particularly in the microbiome. Even more troubling are the safety warnings found on Roundup’s label, which caution users to avoid any skin contact and inhalation.

“Being around glyphosate can lead to various problems,” DeSantis indicated, concluding that the findings concerning bread are quite alarming. Testing by Healthy Florida First found glyphosate in six out of eight leading brands, including Nature’s Own and Wonder Bread.

What’s in Candy?

Though people generally know candy isn’t the healthiest choice, the prevalence of arsenic in many popular brands is less known. In a test conducted by the Florida Department of Health, 46 candy products were evaluated, and alarmingly, 28 of them (or 60%) had detectable levels of arsenic. Brands included Laffy Taffy, Jolly Ranchers, and Skittles.

DeSantis shared a notable insight on its effect on children. “Our analysis suggests that consuming over 96 pieces in a year surpasses safe arsenic levels for kids. When considering theater-sized boxes, that’s a staggering amount.” Eating an entire box could expose a child to over 83 times the annual safe arsenic limit.

DeSantis acknowledged that an occasional treat is fine, stressing that overall consumption is what truly matters. “This information should be disclosed to parents, helping them make better choices for their kids,” she concluded.
