Massachusetts Comptroller Targets Fraud Allegations
Massachusetts Comptroller Diana DiZoglio is calling out legislative leaders and even members of her own party regarding accusations of fraud. Auditors are set to bring a complaint to the state’s Supreme Judicial Court after uncovering approximately $12 million in suspected fraud within the welfare program, as reported recently.
This audit effort began following revelations from Massachusetts voters, suggesting that auditors were looking into the council’s finances.
“What are they hiding? If there’s nothing to hide, let’s get this audit done,” DiZoglio stated, pressing authorities for transparency.
She also mentioned that she sought a performance audit from Congress, but they declined to provide the documentation, and the attorney general has remained inactive on the issue.
“This isn’t about right or left politics. It’s about coming together for transparency and accountability, ensuring that public records remain accessible,” she added. “Unfortunately, in Massachusetts, we stand alone as the only state where the legislature, the governor’s office, and the court system are exempt from public records laws.”
In a social media post, DiZoglio emphasized the ongoing struggle for transparency, noting, “The pursuit of transparency can be hampered by various factors, but we won’t stop fighting.”
On the other hand, the Massachusetts Fiscal Union reported that a significant 72% of voters support the law, accusing elected officials of obstructing enforcement and trying to keep the matter out of court.
“It’s time for transparency and accountability. Taxpayers deserve to know how their money is spent,” the alliance insisted in the video accompanying their statement.
DiZoglio highlighted that tackling fraud is essential for protecting public assistance programs aimed at those who genuinely need support. In May, she asserted that Democratic Governor Maura Healey depends on what she termed “illegal” no-bid contracts—some potentially benefiting political allies—to fund an expansive initiative providing free housing for immigrants.
