DNA from a glove may help find Savannah Guthrie's mother: 'We still have hope'

The search for Nancy Guthrie and the person who took her continues into its third week, with investigators now waiting on DNA results from gloves discovered near her home. Her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, a host on NBC, has publicly urged her mother’s captor to “do the right thing.”

The gloves were located about two miles from the home of the 84-year-old Guthrie and have become a crucial piece of evidence. Investigators believe these gloves resemble those worn by a masked figure seen on doorbell footage at her doorstep.

Details from the FBI indicate that the gloves, sent for testing on February 12, were delivered to a lab in Florida the following day. Preliminary DNA results were obtained on February 14, but final confirmation is still pending. Once that’s complete, the profile will be entered into CODIS, the national DNA database used to match crime scene DNA with existing profiles. Interestingly, around 16 gloves were retrieved from the vicinity, mainly belonging to the agents involved, apart from the ones in question.

“I think we’re getting close,” stated Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos during an NBC interview.

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing after she failed to make it to a friend’s house for a virtual church service on February 1. Investigators suspect she was taken by an armed intruder, as captured on video.

In a recent Instagram video, Savannah shared her ongoing hope, stating, “It’s been two weeks since my mom was taken away, but I wanted you to know that we still believe.” She addressed anyone who might have information, emphasizing that it’s never too late to do the right thing.

Last week, the FBI described the suspect as being about 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 tall, with a medium build, and carrying a distinctive Ozark Trail Hiker Pack, a specific type of backpack sold at Walmart. Authorities speculate that his clothing and mask might also have been purchased from the same store, prompting them to review surveillance footage from local Walmart locations.

In efforts to locate Nancy, investigators have deployed aircraft and drones with specialized technology to track signals from her pacemaker, which ceased functioning around the time of her disappearance.

Anyone with information is advised to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. A reward of $100,000 is being offered for useful tips.
