Kenny Mayne shares news about being banned from Augusta National

Kenny Mayne’s Masters Ban

Kenny Mayne, the former ESPN anchor, has disclosed that he thinks he’s been permanently banned from the Masters at Augusta National. This revelation came during a recent episode of “God Bless Football” alongside John “Stagott” Weiner.

While Mayne didn’t specify when the ban took effect, he seems to have insight into what might have led to it.

The Masters is known for carefully guarding its image and the terminology used in broadcasts, notably referring to spectators as “patrons.” This strict control extends to what is and isn’t acceptable in conversation.

Mayne suspects that a comment made during an ESPN golf broadcast might have crossed a line. He recalls a conversation in which Mr. Stagott inquired whether he had played at the renowned course. Mayne joked, “I think I’m going to be banned from Augusta forever,” reflecting on his extensive coverage of golf events, including TPC Sawgrass and the U.S. Open over several years.

He recounted once making a cheeky remark about attending the Masters with four women, which he now thinks might have been foolish. Shortly after, he learned that the people at Augusta were aware of his comment, leading to his exclusion from being invited. “They were like, ‘He’s not coming!’” Mayne explained, conveying a mix of disbelief and humor.

Interestingly, Augusta didn’t admit its first female member until 2012, breaking an 80-year tradition with the selections of Condoleezza Rice and investor Darla Moore.

It’s worth noting that ESPN has had a long-standing partnership with the Masters, sharing coverage since 2008 with CBS, particularly for the opening rounds of this major golfing event.

I find it curious how such a seemingly light-hearted comment could lead to such serious consequences. Mayne left ESPN in May 2021 after a 27-year career, reportedly turning down a significant pay cut.
