Los Angeles: A Controversial Opinion

Los Angeles, or Lala Land, is often viewed as a paradise. With its warm weather, expansive beaches, stunning sunsets, and vibrant culinary scene, many see it as the perfect place to live. However, not everyone feels that way.

Sophie Cunningham certainly doesn’t. The Indiana Fever player recently took to TikTok to share her strong feelings about the city. In her video, she expressed her frustration with Los Angeles, saying its inhabitants lack individuality and seem too similar.

“I don’t want to be judgmental,” she started, “but I think there’s a place for everyone, and success looks different for different people.” She quickly added, “But I really don’t see myself as an LA girl—not at all. It feels strange. People don’t dance, they don’t greet each other—there’s a distinct lack of personality.” The repetition of the idea that “there’s no personality” struck a chord, and it’s hard to ignore that sentiment.

Then, she touched on the famous influencers who thrive online. It’s curious, isn’t it? They seem so confident in front of the camera, yet she questioned how odd it must be to interact with them in person when they so often avoid eye contact. “I find it weird,” she mused, “but maybe it’s just me? I’m aware I can be a bit eccentric.” The irony of using cellphones to communicate like it’s an in-person conversation isn’t lost on her, and maybe that’s worth pondering.

She returned to her initial point, urging that everyone should “be like you,” as if to emphasize authenticity before adding a weary “umm” to close out her thoughts.

In the background, Cunningham’s recent year has been tumultuous. After being traded to the Fever to join forces with Caitlin Clark, she also filed a high-profile lawsuit last May, alleging an affair involving the Suns and Mercury’s CEO.

As for the future, the WNBA remains uncertain. The league and the players’ association are still negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement. With no clear resolution, Cunningham and her other teammates are left wondering when they might finally hit the court again.
