The use of force by ICE should be investigated by an independent agency.

Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) expressed on CNN’s “The Situation Room” that he believes an external agency, not involved in the incident, should investigate ICE’s use of force. He emphasized the importance of the administration ensuring its account of events is accurate.

Co-host Pamela Brown mentioned how the Department of Justice dropped charges against Venezuelan men initially accused of attacking ICE agents, one of whom was shot. She pointed out that ICE Director Todd Lyons claimed the situation was under control, while also stating that lying under oath is a serious offense. Brown cited past instances, like the Alex Preti case, where DHS provided explanations that later didn’t align with available evidence, raising questions about the agency’s integrity in such matters.

“I’m very concerned,” Gimenez remarked. Reflecting on his previous roles as mayor and sheriff of Miami-Dade County, he stated that the best approach after an incident is to gather facts and understand what happened. He highlighted the necessity of body cameras to accurately depict the events surrounding incidents.

He further noted, “We should address the administration and suggest they verify their version of events before making any statements.” He expressed frustration over labeling individuals involved in incidents and insisted that the focus should remain on whether the officer’s actions were justified. Gimenez believes an investigation by an independent agency is essential for public confidence, ensuring that the findings would be credible and factual, which is what the public seeks to know.
