Barack Obama’s Presidential Center Faces Criticism for Design

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago is garnering attention yet again, this time due to baffling text wrapped around the top of the structure. Local residents seem to be questioning its design, with mixed feelings about some confusing quotes displayed on the building.

Architecture critic Lee Bey shared his thoughts on X, saying, “I’m outside the Obama Center Museum tower right now,” which sparked a wave of reactions from locals and conservatives. He also mentioned that the text, an excerpt from one of Obama’s speeches, was hard to read, feeling almost like random Latin used in design templates.

This center, incorporating a library, athletic facilities, and a museum, is set to open in June after enduring multiple delays, including legal issues and extensive federal reviews. The campus spans 20 acres on Chicago’s South Side.

The museum features a 200-foot tower displaying words from a speech Obama delivered in 2015 in Selma, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. This significant event involved civil rights demonstrators facing violent opposition from local police, an incident that played a crucial role in the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The engraving on the tower includes a powerful message from Obama: “You are America. Unfettered by custom and convention. Unencumbered by what is, ready to seize what is…” The passage speaks to the ideals of unity and perseverance in improving the nation.

Critics on X responded to updates about the building design, with many making humorous comparisons, likening it to a “Klingon prison” from the Star Trek series or questioning the text’s visibility. One user quipped, “What don’t you understand?” pointing out the layout’s impracticality.

In what seems like a mix of frustration and humor, a journalist posted, “The dyslexia in me is not funny.” Another user joked about Obama’s self-love, while others expressed how difficult it was to read the text, with one stating they gave up after feeling overwhelmed.

Interestingly, some opinions are more positive. One individual noted the text looked nice from certain angles, admitting, though, that the overall design might not be ideal. Discussions surrounding the campus also touched on gentrification, with some locals voicing concerns about rising home prices.

A few residents expressed their approval of the center’s aesthetics, mentioning it could become a pleasant park for the community. While the presidential library is framed in a political light, many felt the gentrification of the neighborhoods is a more pressing issue.

The Obama Foundation plans to install the text in late 2025, focusing on supportive structures in preparation. It’s been emphasized by the Foundation that this center is envisioned as a community hub and a center of democratic engagement for the region.

The project has not been without scrutiny, with local concerns regarding brutalist architecture—a style marked by its minimalist design that gained traction in the postwar era. Detractors have referred to it as “Obama Risk,” highlighting a divided opinion about its impact on the surrounding neighborhood.

As local reactions continue to evolve, the Obama Foundation remains optimistic about the center’s role in fostering community and democracy.
