Blast at church leaves 5 injured in Boonville, New York

New York State Police are looking into an explosion at the Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Booneville, New York, which resulted in injuries to five individuals.

Reports from church officials indicate that the pastor and several congregants were inside the building when they called emergency services just before 10:30 a.m. regarding a possible gas leak.

At the time of the explosion, the pastor, churchgoers, and firefighters from the Booneville Fire Department were present. Five people were subsequently transported to Winn Hospital in Utica, with a firefighter and one civilian reported to be in critical condition, according to authorities.

Three other individuals are being treated for injuries that aren’t thought to be life-threatening.

Police stated the church suffered “catastrophic damage,” as flames and smoke spread rapidly through the building within about 15 minutes after the explosion. It’s noted that the church used propane cylinders for heating, though the exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

Authorities mentioned there were no indications of criminal activity. Units from the New York State Police Criminal Investigation Division are present at the location and are aiding in the ongoing investigation.

The church has requested prayers, especially for Pastor Brandon and Maylea, and they expressed gratitude for the protection during this incident. New York Governor Kathy Hochul acknowledged the situation on social media and conveyed her hopes for a swift recovery for those injured.

Both New York State Police and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office have not responded to inquiries for further details.
