Anthony Richardson and Colts May Part Ways
It seems that Anthony Richardson and the Indianapolis Colts are on a collision course towards separation. With the team’s clear commitment to starting quarterback Daniel Jones, it’s becoming increasingly likely that Richardson, a first-round draft pick in 2023, will be looking for a new team as the 2026 season approaches, according to ESPN’s Stephen Holder.
At just 24 years old, Richardson has been on the field for only 17 games in his three years in the NFL.
Holder noted that while no formal trade request has been made yet, it feels like that moment is nearing. When Jones claimed the starting role last preseason and led the Colts to an 8-5 record, Richardson found himself sidelined after suffering an Achilles tendon injury in Week 13.
During this time, he also dealt with an uncommon eye injury related to an equipment mishap last October. It’s certainly a peculiar situation.
Instead of Richardson, the Colts turned to Philip Rivers and sixth-round pick Riley Leonard, who shone brightly in practice and even impressed in the final game of the season. This only complicates Richardson’s standing on the depth chart.
Post-season, the Colts have solidified their commitment to retooling their lineup once Jones recovers. This might hint at a potential extension for him, which further clouds Richardson’s future.
Richardson’s rookie campaign was cut short after just four games due to a shoulder injury. In his second season, he started 11 games but faced criticism, particularly from teammates, during an unusual situation where he came off the bench for just one play against the Texans in Week 8.
Assuming Richardson’s vision issues are fully behind him, he may be actively seeking opportunities elsewhere, which could provide an interesting challenge around his market value.
As Holder highlighted, the past two drafts have seen numerous young quarterbacks emerge, including Kenny Pickett, Sam Howell, Justin Fields, and Taylor Heinicke. This could give the Colts a chance to acquire a talented former first-round pick who, remarkably, is still just 24 years old next season.
