Planned Parenthood Expands Vasectomy Services

Planned Parenthood Federation of Massachusetts (PPLM) has announced an expansion of its vasectomy offerings, referring to potential patients as “sperm carriers.” This comes in celebration of Valentine’s Day, with the organization launching its vasectomy services on that date.

Dr. Lou Ireland, the Chief Medical Officer, commented that for many individuals, receiving this kind of treatment—one that allows for better control over fertility—can be a positive experience. He added that showing people that effective contraception is an expression of love and joy is a significant aspect of their campaign.

Interestingly, a previous surge in vasectomy appointments—specifically a 1,200% increase—was documented after Donald Trump’s re-election. This data is part of PPLM’s effort to promote the notion that contraception is not solely for people who can become pregnant; rather, it should be acknowledged as beneficial for all genders.

In light of the Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (which shifted the authority over abortion laws to the states), there has been growing demand for long-term contraception options, such as tubal ligation and vasectomies. PPLM noted a clear increase in interest for these services post-decision.

To promote the launch, PPLM will distribute “Vasectomy Valentine” cards at a number of local businesses, including Lamplighter Brewing in Cambridge and others in Somerville, Boston, Northampton, and Norwood.

Individuals interested in vasectomies are encouraged to schedule in-person consultations at PPLM’s locations in Boston, Worcester, Marlborough, and Springfield. Currently, the vasectomies are only being performed at the Worcester facility.
