Texas Attorney General Debate: Passionate Republicans ready to clash

Texas Attorney General Debate Set for Tuesday

As the Republican primary for Texas attorney general approaches, an intense debate is anticipated among several prominent conservative candidates.

Taking place at the iconic Granada Theater in Dallas, the debate is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 pm CT. Hosted by the Republican Attorneys Association (RAGA), it will be moderated by Allie Beth Stuckey, a conservative podcaster from Texas. The event will also be streamed online.

With early voting in progress, this primary season in Texas has become quite contentious.

Four Republican candidates are competing for the attorney general position, currently held by Ken Paxton, who is stepping down to run for the U.S. Senate. The candidates include Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), known for his limited government stance; Aaron Reitz, a former official from the Trump Justice Department who was previously Paxton’s assistant attorney general; state Sen. Mays Middleton, an oil executive promoting an America First agenda; and state Sen. Joanne Huffman, who advocates for the rule of law.

Chip Roy, having served four terms in Congress, often finds himself in the national spotlight. A member of the House Freedom Caucus, he’s had clashes with both President Trump and the Republican establishment in the past.

Notably, Trump criticized Roy in December 2024, labeling him one of the “Republican obstructionists” during a tense period regarding government funding and the debt ceiling.

Both Reitz and Middleton have emerged as vocal Trump supporters in their campaigns, targeting Roy with accusations. Reitz termed Roy a “belligerent anti-Trump,” while Middleton echoed similar sentiments about obstructionism.

The focus of the debate’s questions, as stated by Stuckey, will be on the national legal challenges the Texas attorney general faces concerning border issues and constitutional rights. She mentioned that RAGA worked to ensure the questions are relevant not just for Texans, but for Americans more broadly.

Stuckey promised an engaging, informative evening for attendees and viewers.

RAGA’s Executive Director, Adam Piper, emphasized the vital role the Texas Attorney General has at both local and national levels, from defending Texans’ rights to upholding the law for future generations.

Piper expressed eagerness for the candidates to address significant issues facing the state during the debate.
