Winter Olympic Village replenishes condom supply after shortage

Condoms in High Demand at Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina has once again buzzed with love, as approximately 10,000 condoms for athletes were grabbed within just three days and are now being restocked.

The Olympic Organizing Committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) shared this information earlier this week, confirming through various sources the quick depletion of supplies.

According to Italian newspaper La Stampa, the shortage has been attributed to a “higher-than-expected demand.” The IOC aims to continuously replenish the condom supply throughout the Games.

Mark Adams, an IOC spokesperson, commented on February 14, “It’s clear Valentine’s Day made a mark in the village, but there’s not much else to say.” However, he noted that around 10,000 condoms were utilized, mentioning that about 2,800 athletes are present. It’s a fascinating statistic, I guess, but maybe a little offbeat for most.

While it’s uncertain how many more condoms will arrive in the Olympic Village, the IOC is committed to ensuring their availability until the end of the event. The organization has stated its intent to support athletes’ physical and mental well-being, including sexual health services.

Madagascan alpine skier Miritiana Claire expressed that a shortage wasn’t surprising given past experiences. She recalled that during the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, boxes of condoms were quickly emptied as athletes took them for personal use or to share with friends, sometimes even gifting them to fans.

Handing out condoms dates back to the 1988 Seoul Olympics, a practice that continued despite the “intimate relationship ban” during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where around 160,000 condoms were distributed.

In comparison to previous years, the 2026 Winter Olympics will have about 2,900 athletes, which is quite a bit fewer than the 10,500 who participated in the Summer Olympics. Yet, the demand for condoms seems unwavering. This year, the 100,000 condoms provided surpass the roughly 300,000 slated for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Interestingly, La Stampa highlighted that this year’s organizers have not been as generous with quantities in comparison to prior Games. For the 2024 Olympics, the condom packaging will feature bright designs and messages alongside the official mascot of the event.
